Do-It-Yourself Winter Running Spikes

January 27, 2015 by Admin

Winter brings on many challenges when it comes to running; short daylight, freezing temperatures, and dangerous ice.  However all of these challenges can be overcome and running can be very enjoyable in the winter.

To help with one of the challenges each year I take an old pair of running shoes from the previous summer and create my own winter running cleats. Now of course you could go out an purchase the many makes and models like; Yaktrax, Stabilicers, NanoSpikes, ICETrekkers, etc. Or you could decide to create your own and save a little money in the process.

My personal opinion is the ones you create will work better then purchased ice cleats.

Here is the DIY.

  1. Purchase about 20 slotted hex washer head sheet metal screws. I usually use #6 x 3/8″ long for the toe area and #8 x 1/2″ for the rear of the shoe. The cost will most likely be only a few dollars.Screws For Running Cleats
  2. Then using a powered screwdriver screw them right into the bottom of your sole. When doing so pick the highest spot or thickest spot of the sole to insure great contact with the pavement.Winter Snow Running Cleats
  3. Go out and run with confidence on icy roads. When your done post some pictures letting your friends know that the weather didn’t hold you back today.

Thanks everyone and enjoy your running.

Christmas Gift Idea – Black Diamonds …

December 6, 2014 by Admin

Black Diamond Sprinter (Titanium) Headlamp 635 x 360

Black Friday has come and gone and maybe you didn’t find just the right gift for your multi-sport athlete at Kohl’s this year. If that is the case I thought I might offer the idea of Black Diamonds.

Yes the Black Diamond Sprinter Headlamp.

As an athlete myself running this time of the year can be hard because of the reduced daylight. However since I got my Black Diamond Sprinter Headlamp a couple of years ago I have loved running in the early mornings of winter. Especially when its snowing out.

Now this blog is not a affiliate plug it’s just me pointing out a great piece of equipment for runners, triathletes, and hikers.

Now of course there are other bands out in the market but this is the brand and model I picked when I researched them years ago. This model list for about $69. Currently at REI they have it for $51.93 with free shipping.

Give the gift of light to your running friend this year.

If you have a headlamp please share your comments about your experience. Let us know what make and model you like?

And if you liked this post please share it with someone.
